art for advent 2019

Jess Carlock

I am particularly interested in how humans perceive and interact with the landscape as well as investigating the natures of memory and transformation. I create stylized and surreal landscapes, endeavoring to capture the subtle and intangible aspects of place and time, of light and feeling.

For my art for advent project I painted a series of small paintings of bare trees, designed to be viewed both together and separately. ‘Forest’ is 24 8” x 8” squares that can be assembled in multiple ways.

This series allowed me to play with abstraction and reality, as well as explore the differences between individual and group impact. Daily practice both allowed and confined ideas in a smaller mental space.
