Issue Eleven

RMR

Oakland, CA

My work is heavily influenced by mental illness and the stigma which comes with it. Living with my own anxiety disorder and growing up watching my mother’s struggle with schizophrenia, I became keenly aware of how society views neurodivergent people. Discussions of mental illness, if they happen at all, are either infantilizing or sensationalized. It is this fact which my work addresses, exploring themes such as grief, stigma, and denial.

I use a wide variety of media to accomplish this, including video, installation, sculpture, and social practice. By combining all these different forms my work becomes deeply rooted in the process that created it. The difficult and laborious process of living with mental illness and its subsequent effects are embodied in the work through the difficult and laborious process of creating the work.
