An Introduction

This exciting course gives budding animators aged 12–15 an insight into the world of animation, focusing on hand-drawn animation 2D animation.

Course overview

This exciting course has been specifically developed for young animators aged 12–15 that are taking their first steps in the world of animation or have some previous experience. With expert guidance from their tutor, we’ll help them harness their creativity, artistic knowledge, and gain confidence in creating and sharing their work.

This is a perfect opportunity for a young artist to push their ideas and let loose with their creativity. Animation has no limits, and through this course, young artists can take their first steps into the amazing world of animation!

Each week students will learn new skills using industry standard equipment and techniques that are vital in the world of animation. Skills covered includes 2D animation, character design, storyboarding, as well as a comprehensive introduction to the fundamental principles of animation.

Students will be working in our university specialist studio spaces that have been home to our award-winning graduates, using tools and equipment that the creative industries rely on and become a part of our creative community.

 We understand how important young creative artists are – they’ve so much potential, untapped abilities, and enthusiasm. On this course they’ll be supported to fully explore their creative talent and future potential as an animator.

We encourage our young artists to be themselves, and as such we harness a budding artists’ natural style and flair, therefore enabling them to utilise existing creative interests and acquire new skills in the development of their own unique creative visual language.

It goes without saying, too, that we ensure all our young learners are included, respected, and supported every step of the way on their creative journey with us.

Course aims

This course aims to:

  • Provide a new or improved understanding of animation, character design and storyboarding
  • Encourage young animators to explore and develop ideas, incorporating essential skills in communication, improving their knowledge of drawing and design and exploring the different aspects of animation
